More about the White Golden Retriever

In actual fact, there is really no such thing as purebred white golden retrievers. The closest you will get is a retriever that is creamish in color, with very light colored fur but there are no purebred white golden retrievers as such. Some breeders may tell you that they actually do have white golden retrievers, but on closer inspection, you will find that they are not – they are actually just very light colored. One thing you’ll notice is that the breeder may try to sell you the dog at a much higher price than an ordinary retriever, and that’s what should set your warning bells off.

Would there be any distinct advantages if you could get retrievers in pure white as opposed to ordinary retrievers? Not likely. The only difference would be in the color of the fur, but otherwise the much adored temperament of an ordinary retriever would remain the same. If you are after a retriever, rest assured that the color of the dog will not really matter – you will get the same kind of love, devotion and care from any color of a retriever so don’t limit yourself to white thinking that you may get something that’s supremely different.

If you come across a dog that looks like a white golden retriever and behaves like one, you may want to have some genetic testing done on it. Chances are that it has been cross bred with a different breed (not a retriever) of a pure white dog, only that the genes and the quality of the retriever came out much stronger than the other breeder dog and thus the retriever qualities.

There is no such thing as a purebred retriever. Retrievers were developed through breeding and cross breeding of good dog breeds, and as each breed was birthed, the breeders kept on re-breeding so that they could get a perfect dog that would have a great temperament but would help in the fields too and be able to withstand the cold. Once they got the retriever, they stopped breeding and crossbreeding because they had found what they were looking for. Of course cross breeding still goes on today, but no one has yet been able to come up with a pure white golden retriever.

Retrievers are great dogs. If you’re after a pet that will adore you, love your kids, keep you active and is also a looker, any retriever will do. Don’t fixate on a white one – you may not get what you’re looking for.
